Calculate Your Risks

In addition to any current medical conditions you may have (hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.), several tests and measurements are used to determine your individual risks associated with excess weight.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your weight and height, and, in most instances, is an accurate indication of how much you are overweight.

What your number means:

Normal Range: 18.5 to 24.99 = Minimal risk
Overweight: 25 to 29.99 = Low risk to Moderate risk
Class I Obesity: 30 to 34.99 = High risk
Class II Obesity: 35 to 39.99 = Very high risk
Class III Obesity: Greater than or equal to 40 = Extremely high risk

Your BMI risk applies even if you don’t have any other risk factors. If you have hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, you smoke, are sedentary, or have a family history of certain conditions, your risks are even higher for each BMI category.

You can dramatically reduce your health risks with a 5-10% weight reduction!

In addition to BMI values, I also measure your body composition to determine your percent body fat, using bioelectric impedance. This computerized measurement is an accurate way to see how much excess fat you need to lose for optimal health.

Other measurements include your waist size and waist-to-hip ratio that indicates how your excess fat is distributed. I will use all these determinations, in addition to a detailed history and examination to design a program that best fits you. You may contact me with any questions regarding your health risks.
